If Ang Pao is the norm in Chinese New Year gifts, tikoy is its counterpart when it comes to food!
Tikoy or nian gao is a steamed sweet rice cake made of glutinous rice flour. While it can be easily bought in Binondo and eaten year-round, it's most popular during Chinese New Year because people believe that serving it brings good luck to the family.
This 2020, enjoy your tikoy in different ways using these four easy recipes to level up your family's celebration.
#1 Tikoy ala mode
Fry the tikoy the usual way after dipping it in egg. Once cooked, serve it on a plate and top with two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Drizzle with chocolate syrup and sprinkle with crushed almonds on top.

#2 Chocolate Tikoy Lumpia
Roll the tikoy and a chocolate bar or your favorite chocolate spread inside a lumpia wrapper. Deep-fry the rolls until they become golden brown. You can either eat your chocolate tikoy lumpia as it is or dip it in chocolate spread for added sweetness.

#3 Tikoy Butchi
Form the tikoy into balls and roll them in sesame seeds or your own preference of crushed nuts, then deep-fry until golden brown. Let your tikoy buchi dry on a paper towel to absorb excess oil before serving.

#4 Tikoy Turon with Langka
Cut your tikoy lengthwise then roll it with langka inside a lumpia wrapper and lock it with water on the sides. Before deep-frying, add a few tablespoons of brown sugar in the cooking oil until it floats. Finally, deep-fry the tikoy-turon until it becomes golden brown.
