The Uber search for the best puto bumbong in Metro Manila

The humble puto bumbong is usually served with the main star, the bibingka (Read also: The Uber search for the best bibingka in Metro Manila).  If you’ve read our other post, The Search for the Best Bibingka in Manila, you’ll notice we also tried their puto bumbong partners. After Ubering around Metro Manila, we have our verdict:

3. Felymar’s Puto Bumbong (P25)

While Felymar’s bibingka counterpart won our hearts over, the puto bumbong from Tayuman, Manila lacked the chewy texture and sweetness that we were expecting from the puto bumbongs we’re used to back in our respective provinces. Perhaps Felymar’s is called “Felymar’s Special Bibingka” is called such for a reason.

2. Early Bird Breakfast Club: Puto Bumbong Pancakes (P325)

These puto bumbong pancakes from the Early Bird Breakfast Club are a modern twist to the traditional Filipino classic. It was served with grated coconut powder, muscovado sugar, cheddar cheese, and whipped coconut creme on the side. On our first few bites, it came across as strange taste, but the closer you get to the center, the better it got. This dish only comes around every Christmas season so you’d probably want to try it out. This is best eaten for sharing with a cup of hot chocolate.

1. Cafe Via Mare’s Puto Bumbong (P80) with Cheddar Cheese (+P17)

While Via Mare’s Bibingka ranked the lowest in our search for the best bibingka in Metro Manila, their Puto Bumbong stole the show for this round. It was absolutely delicious, the mix of sticky puto bumbong with sweet sugar, salty cheddar cheese, and your unfailing coconut shreds was the perfect combination of flavour and texture. You know something’s good when all it takes is a bite to put a smile on your face. This definitely tasted like Christmas in our mouths.

Luckily, Via Mare has a large variety of branches around, plus they serve this blessing of a delicacy all year round. Needless to say, we’re still on the lookout for the best puto bumbong. If you have any suggestions, let us know!
